Question:
Dear Norm,You may have already had this suggestion from another viewer by now, but my theory on the name of the Turkey Table is that "Turkey Table" is a corruption of the French "trois cercle", meaning of course three circles. You found the table in the Georgia lowlands. It may have made its way to Georgia from New Orleans, explaining the French.I know the idea of verbal corruption from trois cercle to turkey is a bit of a stretch, but I know of two other verbal evolutions which come from a thick southern drawl. Im a physician, and in my residency training I came across two marvelous examples. One patient told me he had had a condition called "Two Buckets of Locust".This translates into Tuberculosis. Another patient reported his brother had "Screaming Mighty Jesus". This unfortunate person had Spinal Meningitis. The real stretch Im going to suggest is that the table may have been a tribute to the French Revolution. I have to say that the table does not have the lines I would design for a table. To my way of thinking, there must have been some strong reason for such a design. I seem to recall a poster celebrating the French Revolution in which the female images depicting Liberty,Fraternity, and Equality were arranged in three circles touching each other. The table may have originally had those images painted into the circles.I have scoured the Net looking for such an image, but so far have not found one.The idea could be totally bogus.Anyway, thanks very much for your shows and your woodworking training. I have put your techniques and ideas to good use over the years. It has been and continues to be very satisfying to work in the woodshop.Al Dearden

Thanks, Doctor, for your diagnosis. A number of veiwers have offered their conclusions on the origins of the "Turkey Table" but not the one you present here. Thanks..
